PLAYSTATION UNVEILS NEW VR CONTROLLER
Following the February confirmation of a new virtual-reality headset coming to PlayStation 5, Sony has revealed the controllers that will accompany the tech at launch. A PlayStation Blog post written by senior vp of platform planning and management Hideaki Nishino detailed the design and features of the controller set, which will include one controller for each hand.
The controllers surround players’ hands in what the blog calls an “orb” shape, which allows players to “hold the controller naturally” and play with a “high degree of freedom.” The blog also mentions the controllers were designed with ergonomics in mind, citing the combination of user testing with a variety of hand sizes and “decades of insights” via previous PlayStation controllers.
Features revealed in the blog include adaptive triggers like those found in the PS5’s DualSense controller, haptic feedback and tracking via a ring on the bottom of each controller. Each controller will also feature two triggers, two face buttons and an analog stick.
No additional information regarding the next PlayStation VR kit was disclosed. Sony did not immediately respond to a request for information on the weight of the new controllers.
