RIOT GAMES NAMES VERIZON OFFICIAL 5G PARTNER, TAPS ICELAND AS HOST FOR ‘LEAGUE OF LEGENDS’, ‘VALORANT’ TOURNAMENTS
Riot Games has a new partnership with Verizon, naming the telecom giant its new official 5G wireless and network Service partner, while also selecting Iceland as the host for two major upcoming esports events.
The Verizon partnership applies to both the League of Legends and VALORANT esports leagues, with the designation applying to multiple upcoming events including the LoL World Championships 2021 and VALORANT esports events in North America. Verizon is also considered the “official founding partner” of VALORANT esports.
Along with the Verizon partnership Riot has also announced the location of two major upcoming tournaments, naming the Laugardalshöll Indoor Sporting Arena in Reykjavik, Iceland as host for both the LoL Mid-Season Invitational and the VALORANT Masters tournament.
The LoL Mid-Season Invitational is currently slated for May 6-23 and will feature 12 of the top LoL teams from around the world in a new, double round-robin format. Teams will be split into groups of four, play all other teams in the group twice, and the top two teams from each group will meet in a second round-robin. From there, the top four teams will advance to a bracket-style final round to determine a winner.
The VALORANT Masters Reykjavik, scheduled for May 24-30, will be the first ever international VALORANT tournament. 10 teams decided from qualifiers across seven regions across the world will compete for points that will go toward qualifying for VALORANT Champions 2021 at the end of the season.
