THIS WEEK IN GAMING HISTORY: PLAYSTATION VITA TURNS 9 YEARS OLD
This Week in Gaming History looks back at the biggest events and releases from throughout the years.
The PlayStation Vita hit store shelves nine years ago this week. Officially released on Feb. 22, 2012 in both North America and Europe, Sony’s second major handheld featured a touch screen, two analog control sticks, a larger screen and increased graphical power. A Remote Play feature allowed a PlayStation 4 system to stream and play games on the portable device. The handheld system launched with games like Uncharted: Golden Abyss, Wipeout 2048 and Little Deviants.
A “first-edition” version of the Vita with 3G connectivity was released a week prior on Feb. 15. The Vita was originally released in Japan two months earlier on Dec. 17, 2011. The system was officially discontinued on March 1, 2019 with Sony having abandoned development on first party games as far back as 2015. The Nintendo 3DS, Sony’s direct competitor in the handheld space, was released on Feb. 26, 2011.
A three-day media event starting on Feb. 24, 2010 provided updates on upcoming Nintendo games for the Wii and DS. The Nintendo World Summit event revealed the release dates of Super Mario Galaxy 2 and Metroid: Other M while showcasing other future titles like Monster Hunter 3 and Sin and Punishment 2.
Noteworthy Releases, Anniversaries
A few mildly interesting patterns for the late weeks of February. Both Plants vs. Zombies: Garden Warfare and its sequel released in the same week but two years apart. The same is the case for Killzone 2 and Killzone 3, both releasing this week in 2009 and 2011 respectively.
The graffiti-spraying, inline skating action game Jet Set Radio Future released this week on the Xbox back in 2002. Although it’s a sequel to Jet Set Radio from 2000, the series never saw another entry.
