Pokemon Go Tour Image

Mobile Games Scroll is a curated weekly roundup of the hottest news from gaming-on-the-go.

It’s a big week for Pokémon as three of the franchise’s mobile games are offering plenty of new incentives to pick up and play.

Saturday marks the start of a new virtual event for Pokémon Go. The ticketed Tour: Kanto event puts a spotlight on the original 150 Pokemon from Generation 1, increasing their appearance in the wild and releasing all shiny variants for each monster from the Kanto region. Tour: Kanto is a 12-hour celebration with additional research quests and the promise of an encounter with a shiny Mew. Before the event begins, players will pick either the Red Version or Green Version. Each ticket type boosts different Pokémon appearances. Tickets are on sale for $11.99.

Elsewhere, updates to Pokémon Masters EX came in full force this week with the addition of a new Sync Pair and a new main story addition. Hailing in from Pokémon Sword and Shield are Pier and Obstagoon, a new 5-star Sync Pair that’ll take over the Spotlight Scout until March 11. The legendary Cresselia enters the Legendary Arena and will be available until March 4. A new section of the main story was also added. Interlude 7 takes place after Chapter 27 and will bridge the gap to future chapters set to appear soon.

Canadian players can get their hands on a regional beta test for Pokémon Unite starting sometime in March for Android users. Originally announced last summer, Pokémon Unite pits two teams of five against each other as they catch monsters, evolve them and defeat enemies, all within a limited amount of time. No word on if other regions will be added to the regional beta test.

Here’s what else is happening in the world of mobile games:

January’s Biggest Games

Mobile gaming revenue trends for January kept on course with recent months. The highest games in worldwide revenue in both the App Store and Google Play include Honor of Kings, PUBG Mobile, Fate/Grand Order, Genshin Impact, Roblox and Pokémon Go.

Honor of Kings brought in $267.3 million while PUBG Mobile took in $259 million. Comparatively, both games remained in No.1 and No. 2 slots respectively, as they did in December. Fate/Grand Order jumped from the No. 7 position in December to the No. 3 spot last month, while Pokémon Go dropped from No. 4 to No. 6.

Titles to Look Out For

Fly through the clouds and sky above London as a pigeon searching for its soulmate. Pigeon: A Love Story throws over a million pigeons into the mix and tasks you with finding that one single pigeon that’s just right for you. In what’s described as “pigeon-based escapism,” the upcoming mobile game uses a calming and relaxing soundtrack to guide its simplistic gameplay as you spot messages from other pigeons and see landmarks of the city. While playing online, the city of London is generated in 3D thanks to Google’s Maps SDK. Playing offline will offer a procedurally generated city. Pigeon: A Love Story releases on iOS and Android on March 1.

Get your daily word play in with Wordsmyth, an upcoming word game for mobile. While ultimately it’s a simple game of anagrams, the artistic approach and slick design offers a daily moment of beauty as the background dynamically changes as you progress further into the game. Nine letters are selected each day and your job is to create as many words from those letters as possible. Wordsmyth is set to release on Feb. 25 for $2.99 on iOS and Android.
