‘MORTAL KOMBAT’ FILM’S FIRST TRAILER BRINGS THE PAIN
The first trailer for New Line Cinema and Warner Bros. Pictures’ upcoming live-action Mortal Kombat film has arrived — and it’s brutal.
The hotly-anticipated clip dropped on Thursday morning, giving fans of the popular fighting game franchise a taste of what’s to come when the film drops in April. The lengthy trailer offers viewers their first look at characters like Sub-Zero (Joe Taslim), Scorpion (Hiroyuki Sanada) and Raiden (Tadanobu Asano), as well as some of the killer moves these fighters’ live-action counterparts can pull off in the real world. It also introduces protagonist Cole Young (Lewis Tan), who leads this rebooted and original story set in the Mortal Kombat universe.
Young is a talented fighter who’s caught in the Outworld emperor Shang Tsung’s (Chin Han) crosshairs. With warriors like Sub-Zero on his tail, Young sets off in search of Sonya Blade (Jessica McNamee) at the behest of Major Jackson “Jax” Briggs (Mehcad Brooks). Young and Jax have the same odd dragon marking, making them kindred spirits.
Young soon finds himself caught up between a rift between Earthrealm and Outworld spearheaded by the Elder God Raiden, training alongside warriors like Liu Kang (Ludi Lin) and Kung Lao (Max Huang). This all culminates in a battle for Earthrealm as Young works to save his family and his soul, stopping Outworld’s evil machinations in the process.
The new live-action Mortal Kombat film is helmed by director Simon McQuoid and producers Todd Garner and James Wan. Written by Greg Russo, Oren Uziel and Dave Callaham, the story will draw from existing characters and set pieces in the Mortal Kombat universe.
The trailer is a meaty taste of what will go down when Mortal Kombat premieres in theaters and on HBO Max on April 16.
