Take-Two Interactive reported a net income of $1.6 billion in Q3, a 10 percent year-over-year increase. The spike in revenue was driven by several Take-Two titles outperforming expectations, including Grand Theft Auto Online, Grand Theft Auto V, NBA 2K, Red Dead Redemption 2, Mafia Definitive Editions and Mafia: Trilogy.

Rockstar’s long-running blockbuster Grand Theft Auto V has now sold 140 million units in its lifetime, Take-Two revealed on Monday. More copies of the title were sold in 2020 than any year since its initial release in 2013. Consumer spending in Grand Theft Auto Online outperformed expectations, increasing 28 percent year-over-year, though no specific numbers were reported. 2020 also saw the highest participation rate for new and returning players in Grand Theft Auto Online. No specific monthly active user data was provided.

Red Dead Redemption 2 also outperformed expectations and has now sold over 36 million units worldwide since it debuted in 2018. 2020 saw a slew of new content debut in Red Dead Online, and, for the first time, made the expansion available for players who did not own the base game.

NBA 2K drove significant revenue for Take-Two, as consumer spending in Q3 grew 67 percent year-over-year and net bookings for the franchise grew 48 percent. Consumer engagement across daily active users, MyCAREER users and My TEAM users was also reported to remain incredibly strong. No specific numbers were provided to support the NBA 2K data. NBA 2K21, launched Sept. 4, outperformed expectations, selling over 8 million units to date. Take-Two also reported NBA 2K21 has a more engaged user base than its predecessor, with average games played per gamer up 14 percent compared to NBA 2K20.

Take-Two Interactive predicted increases to continue through the end of the fiscal year on March 31, expecting net bookings to come in at $3.4 billion, up from the previous guidance of $3.3 billion. This figure is driven by third quarter outperformance and expected consumer spending on Grand Theft Auto Online, NBA 2K, Red Dead Redemption 2 and Grand Theft Auto V.

Upcoming game launches include The Outer Worlds: Peril on Gorgon, The Outer Worlds Expansion Pass and NBA 2K Director’s Cut. Borderlands 3 will also get a new content add-on for its Season 2 pass. Supported by Rockstar Games, both Grand Theft Online and Red Dead Online will continuously add content updates throughout the year. Take-Two is also working to release titles on next-generation consoles, including Grand Theft Auto V in the second half of the calendar year.
