Game studio Phoenix Labs, best known as the developer of free-to-play monster hunting title Dauntless, announced Wednesday they have two new studios opening in Montreal and Los Angeles, joining their established Vancouver and San Mateo locations.

Montreal and Los Angeles were chosen for the new studios for their connection to the gaming industry. Jesse Houston, CEO and co-founder of Phoenix Labs, said, “Montreal and Los Angeles are home to vibrant gaming communities that include some of the best talent in the industry, and we’re excited to have them contribute to our mosaic culture.”

The Montreal and L.A. offices will focus on building new game prototypes and exciting R&D tech products.

Phoenix Labs has seen immense growth in 2020. The company hired 50 developers this year alone, and expects the company headcount to top 250 by the end of 2021. This is part of Phoenix Labs’ strategy for empowering and supporting teams as they develop new games.

“We believe people are the ends, not the means. We aspire to bring joy and delight to players for years to come by providing developers with a long-term home to create the world’s most compelling gaming experiences.” Houston said. “We believe in empowering our people with high autonomy so they can make broad impacts to their games and the studio.”

Houston’s statement speaks to Phoenix Labs’ strategy of empowering teams to foster growth organically through strong leaders and core groups in each of the company’s locations. The Montreal team is led by Andre Roy, a gaming veteran from Ubisoft; Los Angeles is headed up by Omar Kendall, previously of Riot Games.

This announcement comes on the eve of the “biggest content update in Dauntless history,” Dauntless Reforged, available Dec. 3. Dauntless counts over 25 million players, and the Reforged update is highly anticipated within the community. Reforged brings new open world gameplay systems and reimagines the progression and story of DauntlessDauntless is a pioneer of cross platform experiences, one of few games that allow cross-play and is cross-generational with the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S.
